Students and scholars on F or J visas have the best coverage for maternity coverage. However, the benefits have been reduced a few years ago such that the best coverage is 80% coverage of costs, so please be aware that you will be responsible for a portion of all costs. Also note that unless your wife is the J1 visa holder YOU will have to be the primary on the policy and she (with J2) will be secondary. Also note that prices are DIFFERENT for the primary and the spouse, so when you quote the prices, quote them for two people at the same time since the cost will be MUCH HIGHER for your wife's coverage.
There are five policies that cover maternity at an 80% coverage without a set limit on benefits. I will list them in order of their approximate cost. Note that conception has to occur after the start of the plan and most plans ask that you let them know at least three months before your delivery date.
Study USA Pref 300 and Pref 500 both cover maternity at a 80/70% (in network/out of network). Conception has to occur after the start of this plan. This plan will be about $133 for the Elite plan.To get details for Study USA, , please visit the below links
Student Secure Secure Elite, Seletc and Budget plans also cover at 80/70% to the maximum of the plan. The Select plan can be purchased with a $300k maximum, Budget plan can be purchased with a $250k maximum and the Elite can be purchased with $500k.The Elite plan will cost $375 per month, Select about $220 and Budget about $95. We are a family of four. The kids ages is 1.5 and 4 years. We are in New York because my husband is a post-doc at Mount Sinai. We arrived from Denmark (our homecountry) june 1 2017 on J1 and J2 visa. My husband is paid from Denmark and therefor we also have a medical insurance from Denmark.
Now we would like to have another child. Our current insurance dosen't cover pregnancies before 10 months into the program (we have been here in 5).
Can you provide us with a medical insurance thats covers medical expenses during pregnancies? I'm not pregnant yet.
Thanks,
Kathrine
Dear Kathrine,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your J2 visa Insurance needs!
The plans that cover pregnancy and maternity are Global plans and Student plans. Student plans satisfy the J1 Visa requirements and are available for both J1 and J2 visa holders and their dependents.
In the case where J2 visa holder alone needs insurance and J1 visa holder is covered by an insurance already, the plan that covers J2 visa holder alone as primary and provides coverage for children as dependents is :
1. PATRIOT EXCHANGE plan from International Medical Group (IMG):
Hi,
I’m a J1 visa holder and need an insurance plan that satisfies j1 visa requirements. Please suggest a plan that will cover maternity also without any waiting period.
And if I get an insurance which is for max of one year, then I get pregnant for example on the fourth month I will still have insurance for eight months. Then when the year ends and I need to re-apply for another one year, but I will be 8 month pregnant and will the insurer accept me to reply with my pregnancy (which will look like pre-existing condition for the second year)?
Thanks,
Nalan
Dear Nalan,
The Liaison Student should be perfect. This is how the Liaison Student plan covers pregnancy -
"This covers eligible expenses incurred before, during, and after the delivery of the child, including physician, hospital, laboratory, and ultrasound services. Inpatient postpartum stay will be covered for the length of stay recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The plan participant, eligible spouse or their representative must notify us within the first 90 days of the pregnancy. Failure to notify us will result in a 25% reduction in benefits. Eligible expenses are covered if the pregnancy
1) is not the result of in vitro fertilization
2) occurred after the coverage start date
3) occurred to a plan participant or their eligible spouse."
Note they pay only 80% or 60% in plans H or I. The pregnancy will be covered if you keep the same insurance in the second year because it is a covered pregnancy. You would not be able to change companies and get it covered.

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your J1 visa Insurance needs!
We have insurance that covers J Visa holders. It would be nice to know the destination country that you will be traveling to? Our plans do not cover an existing pregnancy. There is a waiting period for that to be covered.
But here are our plans for people with J1 Visa visiting US : J1 Visa Insurance
Please let us know if we can help further.

Hello,
I think the plan that would suit our needs the most would be Study USA but we live in NY City right now.
However, my sister lives in Jersey City, NJ. So, do you think we could give her address to be covered by the plan? If it is mandatory that prenatal care treatment and delivery are done in the address' state, Chloe could be followed by a Gynecologist in Jersey City and deliver there. Tell us if that could work, that would be great!
If this works, I still have a few question before subscribing:
I see in the plan description that routine nursery care is covered for $750. What if the baby as a problem a few days after delivery and it cost $20,000? Would we be covered? What is included in the 'routine nursery care'?
I see in the plan description that covered maternity care expenses are:
