International travelers from Mexico are considered as visitors and not eligible for most domestic US plans. Unless you have an American employer willing to provide health insurance, you will most likely have to purchase visitor health insurance or a global health insurance policy.
The main difference between these two types is that the global health insurance policy is purchased for an entire year at a time (although you can pay monthly, semi-annually, etc.) and it requires an extensive application which can be either approved or rejected by the insurance company.
The global plans provide coverage for pre-existing ailments and preventive care. The visitor insurance plans on the other hand, are guaranteed coverage and can be purchased for shorter periods, less than 12 months.
The benefits of the global health policies come in the second year of the policy when they cover wellness visits and pre-existing conditions. For trips of short durations from Mexico to America, a visitor's plan will work best.
