Plan options for students in OPT status

International students on the F1 visa are allowed to enroll for optional practical training(OPT). This allows students to work off campus, or work without being enrolled for coursework in the university. Since students in this OPT visa status are not enrolled in coursework, they will be ineligible for some student insurance plans. KNOW MORE

F2 visa insurance - FAQ's

01. Are dependents of student's (F2 visa) eligible for coverage?

Yes. Dependents (spouse and/or child under age 18) of enrolled students may apply for F2 visa insurance with the student, or within 31 days of birth, legal adoption, marriage or arrival in country of study. If your dependents are not eligible for Student insurance, they may enroll in one of our other plans for people outside their home country.

Also Patriot Exchange student insurance by IMG is an excellent health insurance for F1 & F2 visa holders. It is ideal because Patriot Exchange can be purchased by the F2 dependent visa holder even if the F1 student is not part of the same Patriot exchange plan, as long as he or she is covered by another plan offered by the school or educational institution

02. I intend to buy a plan for my wife and son who are F2 dependents. As I understand pediatric problems of my son though not free will still be covered under the Atlas America insurance plan right?

As long as the pediatric visits are for any new sickness or injury, they are covered but routine checkups, vaccinations/immunizations are not covered.

03. I read the brochure of the Patriot Exchange plan and found that only J1 and J2 Visa holders are eligible to buy it. Please correct me if I am wrong? I will be on F1 Visa and my dependents will be on F2 Visa.

Patriot Exchange plan is available for F1 and F2 Visa holders too. It is one of the few plans that allows J2 visa holders to buy the plan when the J1 visa holder is not enrolled in the Patriot Exchange plan as a result it is highlighted in the policy brochure.

04. I am F1 student. My wife is now 5 months pregnant. Her due date is in the early November. Is my newborn eligible for the Atlas America coverage? If so, when should I file an application or enroll for him?

Atlas America will not cover pregnancy. However once the child is born you may cover the baby by filling in an additional form, we can help you with this when the time comes.

05. Which are some of best student insurance plans for maternity for dependents?

Students and scholars on F or J visas have the best student insurance coverage for maternity coverage. However, the benefits have been reduced a few years ago such that the best coverage is 80% coverage of costs, so the students will have to be aware that they will be responsible for a portion of all costs. Also note that unless their wife is the J1 visa holder they will have to be the primary on the policy and the wife (with J2) will be secondary. Also note that prices are DIFFERENT for the primary and the spouse, so when students quote the prices, quote them for two people at the same time since the cost will be MUCH HIGHER for the wife's coverage.

There are five policies that cover maternity at an 80% coverage without a set limit on benefits. Here is the list in order of their approximate cost. Note that conception has to occur after the start of the plan and most plans ask that students must let them know at least three months before the delivery date.

  • Study USA student insurance covers maternity at a 80/70% (in network/out of network). Conception has to occur after the start of this plan.
  • Student Secure insurance plans also cover at 80/70% to the maximum of the plan. The Select plan can be purchased with a $300k maximum, Smart plan can be purchased with a $250k maximum and the Elite can be purchased with $500k.
  • Student Health Advantage Platinum student insurance has a $5000 maximum limit to maternity and newborn care coverage. It has a $1 million maximum and a $35 deductible and covers at 80/60%. The plan also covers pre-existing conditions with a 6 month waiting period.
